WHAT IS A CITY?

I am sure most people never think about the precise definition of a city. We tend to assume we simply know one when we see one. But, for the record, a formal definition does exist.

For international statistical comparison, the UN defines a city as a contiguous, high-density urban centre with at least 1,500 people per square kilometers and a total population of at least 50,000.
