SMART CITY LAB · TRAFFIC & MOBILITY

Traffic & Mobility Laboratory

Explore how intersection signal strategies shape modeled queues and travel delay. This educational simulation preserves the existing v3.9 controller logic and seeded arrival model; its outcomes are exploratory, not calibrated real-world traffic forecasts.

A four-way city intersection with traffic moving through coordinated traffic signals

What you can investigate

Use the laboratory to understand how each mode works, then experiment to improve traffic performance—especially average delay—compared with Fixed-Time. Compare runs with the same demand, settings, and elapsed simulation time for a fairer test.

Four simulation modes

Each controller uses the existing model and the same generated traffic-demand framework.

Fixed-Time

A benchmark signal plan alternates green by a fixed schedule. Adjust its green timing to explore how the benchmark responds to different settings.

User-Authored

Set your own queue-responsive timing rules and other control parameters, then compare their modeled delay with the Fixed-Time benchmark.

Manual

Press the spacebar to switch which direction has green. The simulation continues while you control the signal.

V2V

Vehicles communicate and negotiate safe movements through the intersection. Depending on traffic conditions, they may cross without stopping; the model may slow or hold vehicles when a safe crossing is unavailable.
