The plan envisions a city that is easy to get around without a car via a unified digital payment platform for Metro rail, buses, bikes and shuttles. “Ethical proactive technology” will help identify “fire, violence, or other risks to the health and safety of L.A. residents” even before a 911 call. The city will deploy “ubiquitous, ultra-high speed 5G connectivity” across its environs. It calls for the deployment of smart wayfinding kiosks and 10,000 public electric vehicle charging stations.

To address these, the city calls for a series of goals to be met between now and 2028. For example, this year the city intends to develop an “L.A. Street Lighting Strategic Plan,” which includes strategies for shared Internet of Things sensor devices, remote monitoring and “design for new citywide street lamp, while maintaining ownership and intellectual property.”

Los Angeles Is Drawing Up Plans for a Smarter City - Business and Tech
Getting around congested urban areas is time consuming and not easy. In a smart city, however, the use of sensors and phone apps can act as people movers. With a smartphone, users can not only find the fastest route to their destination, they can also track public transportation, car sharing options or bike rentals, with payments for services set up through a pay-as-you-go infrastructure. Transportation departments use apps to better coordinate customer services. Internet-controlled devices allow city managers and engineers to adjust traffic patterns in real time, allowing for a smart traffic flow.

Deployment: Los Angeles Is Drawing Up Plans for a Smarter City - Business and Tech
Of course, you want your trip around town to be safe and efficient. Sensors on traffic lights mean no more sitting at a red light when there isn’t another car in sight. Some cities have smart lighting systems that can sense when someone is in the area, dimming and brightening as needed. Smart meters on water fountains monitors drinking water quality. Even trash collection can be improved with IoT; sensors in public trash containers relay the need for waste removal. By recognizing human movement and the way we use public utilities, cities and citizens will see a decrease in overall energy use and an increasingly safer environment.

Los Angeles Is Drawing Up Plans for a Smarter City - Business and Tech
The proliferation of IoT may make it seem like smart cities are less private cities. It’s true that the devices gather a lot of data. It’s up to city leadership to use this information to not only make the city smart but more responsive. A smart city makes life easier for citizens, guests and municipal workers. A responsive city uses the data gathered to influence the way these systems work. For instance, with the use of virtual and augmented reality technologies, city managers can get a better picture of how people are using city spaces.

Climate Smart Cities Los Angeles : Planning and GIS
The Climate-Smart Los Angeles project delivers on the commitment of the Trust for Public Land to assist the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and City departments in meeting several goals of the city’s 2015 sustainability pLAn and the revised 2019 Green New Deal pLAn. In 2016, we worked with over 20 local experts, who comprise the Technical Advisory Team, ranging from City planning staff, City and County watershed protection staff, LA Metro, public health experts, local academic and research institutions, and community leaders in developing a data-based Geographic Information System (GIS) decision support tool. The tool gives decision makers the ability to identify and prioritize locations, down to the parcel level, where nature-based green infrastructure can achieve multiple benefits. We’ve since updated this tool in partnership with local stakeholders. Below are a few of the City’s Green New Deal pLAn goals we hope can be supported through the Decision Support Tool:
