ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Beijing Daxing International Airport is a major passenger terminal south of Beijing, designed by ZHA Architects and opened in 2019. The terminal’s radial plan gathers several concourses around a central circulation area, creating a distinctive broad-span roof and opportunities for daylight deep inside the building. The architect also documents energy-related infrastructure at the airport scale, including photovoltaic generation and ground-source heating and cooling systems. These features should be identified as airport-wide systems rather than assumed to be visible in any particular photograph. Daxing demonstrates how passenger circulation, structural form, and environmental engineering can be designed together for very large transport facilities.

WHY IT MATTERS

Daxing is a significant example of transport infrastructure shaped around a radial terminal plan, with concourses arranged to meet at a central circulation area. The broad-span roof and daylight strategy connect architectural form to passenger movement at exceptional scale. Existing research also documents airport-wide photovoltaic and ground-source systems, making the project relevant to the study of environmental engineering in major transportation facilities.

RESEARCH NOTES & SOURCES

claimed unverified

Architect reports airport-wide photovoltaic power generation with minimum 10 MW capacity and ground-source heat-pump plus waste-heat system; technology scope is the AIRPORT, not necessarily terminal-only.
