ABOUT THIS PROJECT

The Hive is a learning hub at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore designed by Heatherwick Studio. Instead of long corridors and repetitive enclosed classrooms, the building stacks clusters of rounded tutorial spaces around a naturally ventilated central atrium. Garden balconies, informal meeting areas, and views between levels are intended to encourage social interaction and collaborative learning. The architect documents the building’s distinctive cast-concrete surfaces and environmental design; this should not be confused with evidence of intelligent automation. The Hive is a useful comparison for civic and educational buildings that use spatial organization and passive environmental strategies to support new ways of learning.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Hive organizes university learning around clusters of tutorial rooms and a naturally ventilated central atrium rather than long corridors and conventional classroom rows. Garden balconies and shared spaces are intended to encourage interaction between students and across levels. It is included as an example of how spatial design and passive environmental strategies can support collaborative education without assuming intelligent building automation.
